Burma

Now known as Myanmar, a total of 53 Spitfires were exported to Burma. Three Spitfire F.XVIIIe from Air Command South East Asia (ACSEA) arrived in Burma during April 1948 for strafing actions against the Communist North.
In 1951 the Burmese Government ordered 20 de-navalised, reconditioned Seafire F.XV's from Vickers Armstrong They were extensively modified and given a very similar appearance to the Spitfire XII and delivered by ship to Burma towards the end of 1952.
Burma also purchased 30 Spitfire LF.IXs with Merlin 66 engine from Israel with delivery in 1954/1955. A number of these aircraft encountered problems with the Israeli ferry pilots finding themselves in difficulties resulting in forced landings. (Read the book for details!)
Eventually 29 Spitfire LF.IX arrived in Burma (some being replacements for those that crash landed) but the Union of Burma Air Force had a high accident rate and the maximum strength was never more than 23 Mk IX.
In summary, Burma purchased 53 aircraft from 1948 to 1954:
30 Spitfire LF.IXc/e
20 Seafire F.XVc(e)
3 Spitfire F.XVIIIe

Questions and comments are welcome although I have to admit that
I don't have the time to reply personally to all emails
.
Please make sure that you check the contents of the site first for the answer
to your question - if the answer is already on the site you will not receive
any response but if not, and I do have the time, I will attempt to find an answer...
If you are a modeller please also do not send me emails regarding colour schemes or plans.
The prototype, K5054 was officially "Duck Blue" and I have no details of paint codes.
You can also purchase plans from a number of sites on the internet -
this site offers free information and I do not promote or link to any commercial sites.

Please do not send an email if you are looking for information on flying a Spitfire.....
under UK CAA restrictions we are advised that such flights are not possible.
If you would like to find out what it is like to learn to fly then you can purchase my unique book,
"Learning to Fly in 21 Days" which is my account of gaining a Private Pilot Licence in 1997.
I have also written a number of other business management books,
some of which have been recommended by The Sunday Times,
and all of these can be purchased through Amazon -
